Welcome

Welcome to English for Health Workers 9: English for Allied Health Staff! Laboratory, pharmacy, imaging, physiotherapy and nutrition staff meet many patients every day. Clear, kind English helps patients feel safe and helps the team work well. In this course you practise the English you need to collect and label samples, explain waiting times, explain a medicine label, prepare patients for an X-ray or a scan, give exercise instructions, and give simple food advice and work with the clinical team.

Every lesson has the same steps. Do them in order. One lesson takes about 25 to 35 minutes. You can stop and come back.

Mu KinyarwandaBuri somo rifite intambwe zimwe. Zikurikize uko zikurikirana. Isomo rimwe rimara iminota iri hagati ya 25 na 35. Ushobora guhagarara ukagaruka nyuma.

  1. Goal: what you can do at the end.
  2. Key words: listen, then say each word. Read the example sentence.
  3. Useful phrases: listen and repeat each phrase three times.
  4. Dialogues: listen to real talk in a Rwandan health facility. Then read it aloud with a friend.
  5. Pronunciation: short drills for sounds that are hard for many Kinyarwanda speakers.
  6. Say it at work: one small task to do in your real job.
  7. Listening practice: listen first, then answer. Do not read the script first.
  8. Speaking role-play: practise with a partner.
  9. Quick check and common mistakes.

How to use the audio

  • Look for the audio boxes. Press play, listen, then say it yourself.
  • Listen two or three times. It is normal not to understand everything the first time.
  • Copy the voice: the speed, the strong parts and the tune.
  • Use earphones if it is noisy. You can listen on the bus or at home.
  • Record yourself on your phone and compare.
